MSAC News

Economic Impact of the Arts released

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) has released its Economic Impact of the Arts in Maryland: FY 2014, and the numbers are impressive. The non-profit arts sector generated an economic impact of $1.05 billion, produced $49 million in state and local tax revenue and supported 12,155 full-time equivalent jobs, which generated $383 million in salaries to Maryland residents.

The report also shows the importance of funding arts organizations because each dollar spent on operating budgets generates a $3.20 return in economic activity. In addition to the considerable economic benefits of the arts, the MSAC report showed that an estimated 8.3 million people visited the MSAC's 259 grantee organizations. Support local artists, shop local and online

Just in time for the holidays, the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) has opened its online Maryland Artists Marketplace. The addition to the MSAC site creates a one-stop-shopping destination for unique works by Maryland jewelers, photographers, glass blowers, painters, sculptors, musicians, weavers, writers, and more.

The Maryland Artist Marketplace features a comprehensive search engine allowing shoppers to search by category, price range, county of origin and artist. The marketplace maximizes accessibility to buy local and support Maryland businesses, while providing a powerful tool for consumers seeking to discover new artists.  Artists who wish to sell through the site can opt-in through their existing Maryland Artist Registry account or, for first time artists, create an account through the registry. There are no fees to join the registry or marketplace.

Kristin Helberg of Towson, and Resurrection-St. Paul School students were chosen to create Maryland's ornaments for the "2015 America Celebrates: Ornaments from Across the USA" display at President's Park (White House) in Washington, D.C. Diana V. Sáez is a leading specialist in the field of Latin American music and an accomplished, visionary choral conductor. Founded in 1991, Cantigas is one of the few chamber choruses in the nation that specializes in the varied music of Latin America and Spain. At the end of this season (2015-2016), she will be stepping down after 25-years.

MSAC: Twenty-five years ago, you came up with the idea for Cantigas. How did you put the choir together?

Diana V. Sáez: I had just moved from Boston to Washington DC with my husband and our one-year-old baby. I had finished graduate school with a degree in conducting and was looking for a job. The DC Metropolitan Area was and still is, a choral hub with many different kinds of choirs. None performed choral music from Latin America. I had a big collection of choral music from Latin America, and with the help of my friend Lorraine Villanueva, who had just graduated with a degree in arts management we made a plan. We announced auditions on free newspaper listings and by word of mouth. We got a great response and sang our first concert on December 1991 to a full house. The rest is history.

Yoshi Fujii is a resident artist, instructor, and staff member at Baltimore Clayworks in Maryland. Design and function of the work, he says, are influenced by his heritage. Porcelain and translucent glazes, such as celadon, historically sustain the value; also suggest the fascination toward elegance and beauty.

Yoshi moved to U.S. in 1996 from Fukuoka, Japan. In 2000, he received a B.A. in foreign language and a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Southern Mississippi. In 2002, he received a B.F.A. in sculpture with an emphasis in ceramics and an M.A.T.L. in English as a second language in 2003. After completing a residency in Natchez, Mississippi, he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he earned his M.F.A. in ceramics in 2008.

In 2008, Yoshi was selected as the Lormina Salter Fellowship Artist, and he also received 2010 Mary E. Nyburg Fund for Artist Development from Baltimore Clayworks for his 10-week residency at Tainan National University for the Arts in Taiwan, ROC. In 2011, he won the b-Grant from Baker Artist Awards and the Individual Artist Award from Maryland State Arts Council in 2015 for excellence in craft. His work has been published and shown in national and international exhibitions and competitions and Fujii has won several awards. He is the Ceramic Monthly’s 2015 Emerging Artist and a fellow of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi.

His current work and additional information is available on the Maryland Artist Registry and at www.yoshifujii.com.
