June 13

Maryland's premier celebration of traditional arts returns on Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 11am-7pm on indoor and outdoor stages at the Creative Alliance, on the 3100 block of Eastern Avenue in Baltimore. The Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival, a program of the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), celebrates traditional arts, music, crafts, and foods that epitomize Maryland as a distinct and dynamic cultural place.

A kaleidoscope of cultural activities from the longstanding local practices of screen painting and boat building to the global traditions taking root statewide like Korean drumming and Salsa dancing – is on display throughout this free daylong celebration. Workshops for children and adults include piñata making, a jug band for kids, Chinese brush painting, egg decorating, and Native American broom making. Read more.

A&E Districts Grow Across the State

Congratulations to Chestertown and Grantsville for their new designation as Arts & Entertainment (A&E) Districts, which increases the number of Maryland’s A&E Districts to 24. Also, Berlin and Denton’s districts were re-designated for 10 more years, and Salisbury and Denton were approved for expansion. A&E Districts offer incentives to encourage artists, arts organizations, and arts businesses to locate in a designated area of the city or town. New designations take effect July 1, 2015.

Join the Maryland Artist Registry

The MSAC invites artists to share their work on the Maryland Artist Registry. The MSAC recognizes Maryland artists who are creating work of exceptional quality within a range of disciplines. To encourage visibility of these talented artists, MSAC created the Maryland Artist Registry. This free registry highlights the immense breadth of creative talent in our state. MSAC Welcomes Julie Madden

The MSAC welcomes Julie Spangler Madden as one of Council’s newest members. Councilors serve three-year terms.

MSAC: Congratulations on your appointment to the MSAC by Governor Larry Hogan. You have had an interesting career, from commodities trader to arts advocate. What in your life pointed you toward giving your time to the arts?

JSM: Thank you. From an early age, I was fortunate to be exposed to the fine arts and encouraged to nurture my esthetic interests. There has never been a time when the arts have not been a part of my life. I've always loved the arts and felt a special connection to those who create it.

MSAC: As a child, were you interested in the arts?

JSM: What child isn't? I was lucky to be born into a family of artists. My grandfather was an illustrator and political cartoonist, as was my father. My cousin is a prominent portrait artist, and my aunt and uncle were painters. Read More.

Meet the artist, Andy Poxon
