It’s Time for the Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival

The Maryland State Arts Council’s Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival, Saturday, June 4, from noon to 8 pm, at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson, 3134 Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, is an annual celebration of traditional arts, music, crafts and foods that highlights Maryland’s rich cultural heritage.

Featured at this year’s festival is legendary R&B vocalist Winfield Parker, who has collaborated with Little Richard, The Temptations, James Brown, Etta James and others.

Entertainment on outdoor and indoor stages includes Afro-Cuban, Ethiopian, and Polish dance, honky-tonk music, African-American gospel and Nepali and klezmer musical traditions.

An epic dance battle organized by Urban Artistry and set to the beats of Baltimore Club music from DJs Karizma and Baronhawk will take place. Throughout the day, visitors can learn about traditional crafts and foods through interactive demonstrations and workshops.

In Memoriam
It is with sadness that we report that sculptor Joanna Blake, 39, passed away from a motorcycle accident  on May 22 while on holiday in Italy. The Cottage City, MD resident, known for her Public Art across the country, had recently completed an 8-by-10-foot bronze sculpture, "Undaunted in Battle,” commemorating the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 Battle of Bladensburg in Bladensburg, MD.
