The 3rd Annual Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival is Saturday, June 15 at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore

The 3rd Annual Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival is Saturday, June 15 at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore—rain or shine. The festival is presented by the Maryland State Arts Council’s Folklife program, From Maryland Traditions.
The free, family-friendly festival features two music stages, workshops for kids and adults and a mix of distinctive Maryland foods.

Folklife Festival Performer

WYPR profiles Folklife Festival performer
“Uhwachi-Reh” is a Tuscarora name meaning “Extended Family.” Thousands of Native Americans – mostly from North Carolina’s Lumbee and Haliwa-Saponi tribes – migrated to Baltimore’s Fells Point neighborhood following the Depression to work in the city’s booming industrial plants. Louis Campbell (pictured), who is Lumbee, leads Uhwachi-Reh and creates ceremonial regalia influenced by inter-tribal pow-wows. In an interview with WYPR’s The Signal, Campbell says he considers dancing to be “a form of prayer in motion."

Campbell, who is cultural director at Native American Lifelines in Baltimore, will dance in the regalia, which he made by hand, at the 3rd Annual Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival. More than a dozen other traditional artists and performers will lead workshops or demonstrations in arts that include screen painting, banjo making, engraving, boat building, decoy carving and more. Music at the festival includes jazz headliner Lafayette Gilchrist and the New Volcanoes, plus a dozen other musical styles, from Doo-Wop to Bluegrass. “Art Works” with Gov. O’Malley
A musician and artist in his own right, Maryland Gov. O’Malley’s leadership during the legislative session helped pass new public art legislation and restore arts funding to pre-recession levels. In February, he received the Americans for the Arts Public Leadership in the Arts Award, becoming the only elected official to do so as both a mayor and a governor.

As vibrant statewide arts continue to advance Maryland, the National Endowment for the Arts caught up with Governor O’Malley (pictured left in Station North Arts & Entertainment District) to ask a few questions about the arts in Maryland and beyond.  Read the interview. State’s A&E Districts grow, attract funds
At the June 4 annual meeting of the Maryland Arts & Entertainment (A&E) Districts, the MSAC announced the addition of two new districts: Historic Stevensville (Queen Anne’s) and the Leonardtown (St. Mary’s), which  brings  the total number of unique A&E districts in Maryland to 22. The designation offers various tax benefits to attract artists, arts organizations and businesses to locate in a jurisdiction that is in turn enlivened by arts activities and enterprise.

The announcement comes on the heels of a new FY2012 economic impact report that shows significant growth in jobs, wages, tax revenues and GDP, compared to the previous report covering fiscal years 2008 through 2010). See CBS Local news coverage.

Also at the meeting, two major ArtPlace America grants, which impacts four A&E Districts were announced. The first, a $200,000 grant to the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts (BOPA), will support an art in transit collaboration between Baltimore’s three A&E Districts (Bromo Tower, Highlandtown and Station North.

A second grant of $240,000 to Joe’s Movement Emporium, will support phase II of “Art Lives Here,” a visibility campaign designed to showcase creative life in the Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District.

The annual A&E District Outstanding Achievement Award, which recognizes the district that achieves the greatest social and economic impact in a given year, was presented to both Gateway and Silver Spring A&E districts as co-recipients.
