Maryland Employment Steady in June
Maryland virtually stayed in place and matched the nation’s own stable growth rate losing 300 jobs in June. Professional and business services gained 2,800 jobs with 1,600 of those in professional, scientific and technical services for 0.7% growth, compared to a national rate of 0.3%. Maryland also added 3,500 state and local government jobs. Administrative support and waste management services added 1,200 jobs, for a 0.8% growth, 9th fastest in the country. The rapid growth could indicate increased demand for area temporary workers.

Construction led private job losses for the third straight month, losing 2,800 in June and reaching its lowest level since March 1993. Retail trade lost 1,700 jobs, dropping to its lowest level since March 2010. Private educational services had a rough month, losing 1,100 jobs on the month and almost 7,000 jobs (9%) since its most recent peak in October 2010.
