23 Firms Receive $96M Investment in Q2
Venture capitalists invested $96 million in 23 deals in Maryland during the 2nd quarter of 2011, including eight investments from TEDCO’s Maryland Technology Transfer and Commercialization Fund totaling $600,000. One of the largest deals, NovaSom, Inc. in Glen Burnie, closed $35 million in equity financing from multiple investors to expand its sleep management technology services. Total investment in the 2nd quarter increased 60% over the 1st quarter when $59 million was invested in 15 deals. Investments in life sciences, including medical devices and biotechnology, accounted for 10 deals totaling $68 million.

Software and media and entertainment accounted for another seven deals and $26 million and seed/early stage deals accounted for 10 of the deals. Nine investments in later stage companies accounted for $78 million of the $96 million invested. Despite the increase, the $155 million invested in the first half of 2011 represented a 17% decrease from the $201 million invested in the first half of 2010.
