First Lady Joins 40th Maryland Arts Day Celebration

On February 14, First Lady Yumi Hogan joined Secretary Mike Gill, and Theresa Colvin, executive director, MSAC, and more than 500 arts advocates in celebrating Maryland Citizens for the Arts’ 40th annual Maryland Arts Day. The event included the presentation of the 2017 Sue Hess Maryland Arts Advocate of the Year award to Busy Graham, a former director of the Institute of Musical Traditions, founder of Carpe Diem Arts, and a lifelong arts advocate.

The event comes on the heels of the announcement of Governor Larry Hogan’s record-setting budget of $21 million for the Maryland State Arts Council in FY2018. “The arts community in Maryland is one of the strongest in the nation as evidenced by the great turnout at Maryland Arts Day,” said Colvin. Maryland’s non-profit arts sector generated an economic impact of $1.16 billion in FY 2015 while supporting 14,565 full-time jobs.
