Maryland State Arts Council Announces New Executive Director

Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill joined with Maryland State Arts Council Chair Shelley Morhaim to announce Ken Skrzesz as the next executive director of the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC). A longtime arts advocate and performer with more than 25 years in arts education, Skrzesz will take on his new role in mid-October, following the six-month tenure of Julie Madden, who held the position in an interim capacity. “After a national search and meeting with a number of very qualified candidates, we are pleased that Ken Skrzesz will be leading MSAC and bringing to the role his passion and dedication for the arts and arts education,” said Gill. “I also want to commend the excellent work of our interim executive director Julie Madden. Julie has been a longtime arts advocate and we look forward to continuing to have her as our trusted partner in promoting the arts and arts organizations.”

Maryland State Park System Continues to Grow

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continues to grow Maryland’s thriving state park system with one new park recently dedicated, and another announced. On September 30, the property formerly known as “Friends Delight,” an 81-acre tract of land in McHenry with historic buildings, picnic shelters, and more, will officially become the Sang Run State Park at Friend’s Store.

Additionally, the Board of Public Works unanimously approved DNR’s acquisition of 2,009 acres of land in Garrett County for the establishment of another new state park. This county-approved purchase provides for the permanent conservation of a variety of important natural resources, and will provide recreational opportunities for biking, camping, fishing, hiking, and hunting as well as angler access to 3 miles of the North Branch. In addition to preserving these resources, two of the properties include several miles of established off-road vehicle trails.

Storytelling, music, dance, food, clothing, and craft are just a few ways people celebrate their culture, heritage, and communities through folklife, or living cultural traditions. Folklife centers, like those operating in Vermont, Nevada, and around Washington, D.C., support communities and their traditions in a variety of ways, from cultural programming to workshops and research.

Maryland Traditions, the folklife program of the Maryland State Arts Council, is currently collaborating with a Goucher College-led consultant team to assess the feasibility of a Maryland folklife center. We invite you to contribute your ideas and insights on a potential state folklife center by completing the survey below. We also encourage you to share it with artists, administrators, culture workers, community leaders, and anyone else you feel might share an interest in this project.

The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete, and you can begin it at http://survey.sogosurvey.com/r/i6GIXG. Thank you for your time and interest in supporting this project. Send any questions or concerns to the consultant team at mdfolklifecenterstudy@gmail.com
