Apply Now for 2020 National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Grants

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program (NTF) is pleased to announce that there will be $127,000 in grant funds available this year. In collaboration with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the NTF will be offering competitive grants ranging between $1,000 and $10,000. Funds can be used for preservation and restoration of buildings associated with the Underground Railroad (UGRR), for interpretation, and for historical research related to Network to Freedom listings.

Only Network to Freedom sites, programs, and facilities are eligible to apply. Listings that were accepted for the January 15, 2020 round can also apply. Also, in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, special consideration will be given to projects that focus on women and the Underground Railroad. The grant application and instructions will be available online April 20, 2020 on ASASLH’s website. Applications will be due May 29, 2020 and proposed projects must be completed by September 30, 2021. Maryland Brewery Launches Online Beer Delivery Platform

Rockville’s True Respite Brewing Co. has launched an online platform to help brewers sell their products to customers during the COVID-19 outbreak. The new service called Biermi provides businesses with a direct-to-consumer solution for breweries while allowing beer lovers to shop local brewery selections from home. Said Brendan O'Leary, co-founder of True Respite, “We were watching what was happening with the pandemic in Italy, and it was like seeing into the future for the U.S. We realized the only way [for our business] to survive this was to go straight to consumers, so we made the jump.” In just over three weeks nearly six dozen breweries have gone live on Biermi, including 19 from Maryland, and the app has produced $220,000 in beer sales. Learn more about the free platform on biermi.com.
